A super cute, FUN accessory...
for my daughter's Sweet 16!
I never would have guessed my daughter, Amelia (below left), would want to wear a flower crown for her 16th birthday party! But I’m so glad she did! It was a fun project for me to do, and it turned out so pretty! She celebrated a joint bday with one of her besties, and I’m pretty sure the two girls felt glammed up a notch with this pretty little addition to their already fab matching outfits. They chose an outdoor simple Summertime floral-type theme and their ensembles were perfect for the special occasion 🙂

The girls and I headed to Michael’s where we picked out the faux flowers for the crowns. They chose a blue and pink color scheme for their rompers that we matched the flowers to. We added a little white daisy in the mix to add some interest and be consistent with the summery floral theme they were going for. You can choose almost any little flower you want. The pink and blue hydrangeas were a perfect size for this project and added the right amount of color to each crown.
Here’s what I used to make these fab crowns (left pic above):
~small faux flowers
~hot glue gun and clear glue sticks
~18 gauge wire (right pic above). I found this one with a jute wrap
~ wire cutters
I used two of the jute-wrapped wires for each crown and intertwined them together. I literally measured to my head circumference by placing the ring on my head. You want it to be a bit bigger than your head circumference because it will shrink once all of the flowers are glued on. I’d say I made them about an inch bigger all the way around.
The white daisies came with a great amount of nice-looking greens on them. If you choose flowers that don’t have any green leaves, then you need to buy separate greens. The greens are the base of the crown and cover the wire.
I cut several branches from the big bunch of daisies.
Next, I wrapped each daisy stem around the wire. Fortunately, the daisy stems were wired also which allowed them to intertwine nicely with the circumference wire and stay put. If your green stems are not wired, you can use an additional small wire or hot glue to “tack” them in place here and there.
I continued to add the daisy stems layered on top of each other until I completed the circle. In this project, I used five stems in total.
There were lots of fly-away stems at this point…but I was getting there! It was already looking great…LOL!
You want to hot glue the sticking-out stems to the wire so it starts to look more uniform. Be careful! The glue will burn your fingers! For this part, I used a chopstick to hold down the stem while the glue was cooling and hardening.
After you have glued everything down, the base form really takes shape!
At this point, it’s all about adding the color that you want. I cut the petals off the heads of the hydrangea so as to only add a touch of pink (as opposed to a ton of pink). The girls wanted mostly green with a little white and a little color balanced all around the crown. This is where I just “eye-balled” my way around the circumference making sure to evenly spread out the white and the color. I would suggest starting with less because you can easily add more as you go along. Remember to use a chopstick or something else to help you hold down the flowers that have super hot glue on them!!
And here’s the finished products in all their glory! They turned out great and didn’t take much time at all once I got organized 😉
I was prepared to bobby-pin the flower crowns to their hair but actually didn’t even need to. The crowns fit snuggly on their heads without being too tight or too loose.
The party was a big success, and now the girls have a special keepsake to hang in their rooms, which is kinda cool 😉
This was a super creative project that I highly recommend! You can make your own unique crowns for any occasion…the possibilities really are endless!
Give it a try and have fun!
