09 May Mother’s Delight
A Sweet Mother's Day Gift~
Her coffee mug never looked so good!
Happy Mother’s Day!
I don’t know about you, but I would LOVE for my kids to make me a simple muffin and put some flowers and moss in a great coffee mug (latte on the side, of course 😉 for me for Mother’s Day! I don’t need anything expensive or extravagant! I love a simple gesture, and this little Mother’s Day mug of flowers is just that. Read on and I’ll tell you how to make this for your mom, for your mom-in-law, your grandmom, or YOU!
Here’s what you need: garden shears, any knife, a cool mug (I got this one from Home Goods), a brick of wet floral foam, some green spanish moss, and of course some flowers! You can use almost any flowers that you love! In this particular arrangement, I used orange ranunculus, purple peony tulips, yellow roses, and bupleurum greens. (Please note: the ranunculus and tulip stems are pretty fragile. I had to be really careful when sticking them in the foam). You can totally just use roses and moss and it would turn out beautiful!
First I measured my (dry) floral foam up against the mug and carefully cut it with the knife. Don’t worry it doesn’t have to be perfect, but you want the foam to take up most of the diameter of the mug so that you have lot’s of surface area to stick the stems into.
Next, I soaked my foam in my bucket for about 10 minutes. When saturated with water, I roughly trimmed up the edges of the wet foam to fit into my mug.
You want the foam to sit in about a half an inch below the top of the container. This will allow the moss to sit in and stay in place when you put it in at the end. Again, this does not have to be perfect, but you can see that the foam takes up most of the space in the mug which will allow more surface area to stick the stems in.
I started with the roses and cut the stems about 6 inches long. You want your stems to stick into the foam about 1 1/2 or 2 inches. Your flowers will stick up about 4 inches from the top of the mug. You want your flowers to fan out at the same angle. This gives the arrangement a pretty symmetrical, balanced look. Stick your stems in at a slight angle so the arrangement looks bigger. If you stick your stems in straight up and down, you have less surface area of the flower heads and your arrangement will be smaller and look too straight…you know what I mean? Try not to keep taking the stems out to reposition or you will have too many holes. In a small container like this, you don’t have much room for error or your foam will be too holey and the stems will no longer stand up (no pressure!).
I then repeated those steps with the tulips and ranunculus and lastly the green buplerum. I chose the ranunculus stems that were the most firm in order to be able to gently stick them into the foam. (Sometimes ranunculus stems are super flimsy and will not work in this kind of foam arrangement.)
Now it’s time for the moss- my favorite part! It’s my favorite part because it totally finishes off the arrangement, hides any imperfections, and gives any arrangement that “wow” factor! Unlike other types of moss, this green spanish moss does not need to be dampened before placing it in your arrangement.
Simply pull apart some chunks of moss and place in the container. You can weave a little bit in between the flower stems as you do not want to see any of the floral foam. This is not an exact science- just eyeball it and let it be rustic! It’s so easy, people. You will fall in love with this part, trust me 🙂 Fill in all around the container and boom…you are done! Enjoy for yourself or have fun giving it to your mom! ~Happy Mother’s Day!
