It’s Canada Day, Eh!

In case you didn’t know…I’m a proud Canadian citizen and, as of two years ago, a naturalized citizen of the United States.  My whole family, besides my husband and kids and In-Laws,  lives in British Columbia where I was born and raised.  So, I CAN’T NOT post about Canada Day coming up on July 1st!!

Nearby where my kids go to school is THIS GIANT WALL of red bougainvillea. It’s so amazing I had to tell everyone about it! It literally spans the entire length of a city block.  It’s just the most beautiful thing! The pictures don’t do it justice, of course. The color caught my attention, and I immediately thought about the red in the Canadian flag. Hence, this FLOWER TANGENT was born!

Bougainvillea is such a cool plant. Canada is such a cool country. Here’s 3 things that they both have in common:

  1. Bougainvillea is native to South America…Canada is a country in North America. They are both American 😉
  2. The Bougainvillea plant is sometimes called “paper flower” because its bracts are thin and papery…Canada is one of the top 10 countries in the world to produce paper.
  3. The actual flower of the Bougainvillea plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colors associated with the plant, including pink, magenta, purple, RED, orange, white, or yellow…Canada’s official colors are RED and white as a result of the proclamation of the Canada Coat of Arms by King George V in 1921.

I was thinking about blogging about the maple leaf for this post…obviously! After all, maple leaf = Canada. But then I saw this red bougainvillea wall! I mean that’s what it’s all about for me…sharing outside-the-box concepts, going off on a tangent,  and keeping it interesting!

Guess what?! I did a flower video for this celebration! Surprise!- there are not any maple leaves involved! (i know…what the H-E-double hockey sticks!!!) I think it’s pretty and Canadian regardless.  Check it out below!

To all my fellow Canadians- have a fun Canada Day celebration with your family and friends! To all my American friends and family- have fun celebrating with your Canadian friends!!

Happy Canada Day!
