Flower Cakes For Any Occasion!

It's a "sweet" celebration centerpiece

...and it's completely calorie free!

It’s no surprise that a cake is one of, if not THE most symbolic item of any kind of celebration. It’s definitely the tastiest! 😉 When you think about it, it actually brings everyone to the table to gather around in honor of someone or something great. It represents something special, something momentous. In this post, I’ll show you that a cake doesn’t have to be only something you eat! I LOVE a good fresh flower cake just as much and so I thought I’d share how to make it with you all!

Many years ago, I got the idea in my head that I wanted to make a flower cake for a loved one’s birthday. I stumbled across the idea of using a regular old cake pan I had sitting in my cupboard…and the rest was history. I’ve made flower cakes ever since for various celebrations. It acts as a cool part of the party decor. Browse through my photos below for a taste!

Hope you enjoy!

My fav way to make the cake is with these three simple flower “ingredients”: 1- roses, 2- any small chrysanthemum variety, and 3- moss. Any colors will do! The great thing about this is that you can customize it to fit whatever color scheme/theme you are going for.

I am always using containers for my flower arrangements that are not necessarily meant for flowers. I am a firm believer in that you can use almost anything as a vessel to put fresh flowers in. If it could leak, u just need to line it with plastic and it’s good to go!

So here’s how to create this fun arrangement…

Any 9″ cake pan will work. I have used many colors including gold, silver, espresso, white, and black. The flowers are the main attraction, so using the pan that you happen to have at home would prob be fine.

You need wet floral foam that you have soaked in a bucket of water for at least 10 minutes. You can get the floral foam at Michaels, or on Amazon. You can even get it through my website right here Wet Floral Foam on Amazon

I used a kitchen knife to carve the foam to fit into the cake pan.

You need to purchase two or three bunches of mini chrysanthemums, like these green button poms I used. To create the sides of the cake, you cut the stems super short…like only an inch or so long. If the stem is too long, it will bend and break when you stick it into the foam.

You stick them in side by side until you form a complete row all around.

I repeated this step to form another row directly above the first one. That’s it for the sides!

Now for the really pretty part…the rose top! Whatever color of roses you choose, they will be lovely…trust me! For a 9″ cake pan, you will need 12 roses.

I cut the stems about 3 inches long and then stuck them into the foam. You want to place the roses fairly close together to fill the entire top of the foam.

To finish off the flower cake, and so you don’t see any floral foam, I simply placed a layer of moss around the perimeter, under the outside edge of the roses. In this particular arrangement, I chose to use sheet moss which I dampened in my water bucket to make it more pliable. You can purchase the Sheet Moss on Amazon here!

Last but not least, I added a few decorative straws to act as candles…et voila you have a pretty, decorative Birthday cake!

As I mentioned above, these flower cakes can be used for any occasion or even just as an everyday fresh flower arrangement for your home decor! I made the flower cake above with two different mini chrysanthemums, roses, green hypericum berries, and some mini calla lilies in the center. This one was a bit more involved but came together just like all the others. The earthy colors were perfect for an outdoor dinner party with friends.

An anniversary flower cake is always a sweet sentiment because…well why the heck not?! In this arrangement, I used pink and white carnations and topped it off with my fav pink peonies!

Adding a flower cake to a drink table or a dessert table is such a great idea! It adds a ton of character, color, and texture…not to mention it’s super fun and will be a conversation starter for sure! As you can see I used roses along with these super funky carnations. Don’t underestimate the carnations, people! There are some amazing ones out there!

The possibilities really are endless. The flower combination I used in this one for the top was pink roses and white carnations.

I think making flower cakes is one of my top ten favorite flower arrangements to create. They are so easy and I don’t have to stress about what the outcome will be! They make the perfect calorie-free birthday gift and always put a smile on the recipients’ face. They add so much interest to a display or welcome table!

I encourage you to go out and make one for your special person…or even for yourself! To make it even easier for you, I made a DIY video that you can watch on my YouTube channel! Be sure and subscribe so you have access to all my fun flower videos!

Don’t forget about the flowers for your next celebration, people! 😉
